Before we sail back down to Antigua, want to make one last stop at our beloved Cocoa Point. Soon we will leave the Caribbean and sail back to Europe, so this may be the last time we have the opportunity to sail here. Flying Penguin goes directly to Antigua and promises to keep a space for us in Falmouth Bay when we get there.

Innan vi seglar tillbaka ner till Antigua, vill göra ett sista stopp vid vårt älskade Cocoa Point. Snart ska vi ju lämna Karibien och segla tillbaka till Europa, så det är ju kanske sista gången vi har möjlighet att segla hit. Flying Penguin går direkt till Antigua och lovar att hålla en plats åt oss i Falmouth Bay när vi kommer dit.

We anchor inside the reef as far towards the shore as allowed and as close to the reef as we dare to have a clear view to the south and southwest. Modern catamarans are large with high hulls and superstructures. They take away a lot of nice views. In some places we have been, we have barely seen the beach for all the catamarans that have anchored between us and land. The same thing if there are some catamarans behind us, then they often obscure the view of the sunset.

Vi ankrar innanför revet så långt in mot stranden det är tillåtet och så nära revet vi vågar för att ha fri sikt mot söder och sydväst. Moderna katamaraner är stora med höga skrov och överbyggnader. De tar bort rätt mycket fin utsikt. På vissa ställen vi varit har vi knappt sett stranden för alla katamaraner som ankrat mellan oss och land. Samma sak om det ligger några katamarner i lä om oss, då skymmer de ofta utsikten mot solnedgången.

Cocoa Point snorkeling

On the last visit here we did not dare to snorkel because we had heard that the crew of a boat had aimed a group of tiger sharks at their boat which was anchored here at Cocoa Point. Sure, the boat was a few 100 meters further out than us, but still, tiger sharks we have great respect for and are not happy to be in the water if they are close.

Now we had found out more about the incident and it turned out that they had taken their dinghy to the reef in the evening and lured the sharks with food to see tiger sharks.

I think it’s an irresponsible behavior. It can put other people in danger when the sharks learn that there is food where there are boats.

We have also read that tiger sharks, mainly younger sharks, can swim into shallower waters in the evening and at night to hunt. Now that we know this, we dare to snorkel on the reef again. Unfortunately, the reef is quite ruined with large areas where there is hardly anything growing, the bottom is full of broken coral branches and almost no fish at all.

Vid förra besöket här vågade vi inte snorkla eftersom vi hade hört att besättningen på en båt hade siktat en grupp tigerhajar vid sin båt som låg ankrad här vid Cocoa Point. Förvisso låg båten några 100 meter längre ut än vi, men ändå, tigerhajar har vi stor respekt för och befinner oss gärna inte i vattnet om de är nära.

Nu hade vi tagit reda på mer om händelsen och det visade sig att de hade tagit sin jolle till revet på kvällen och lockat till sig hajarna med mat för att få se tigerhajar.

Jag tycker att det är ett oansvarigt beteende. Det kan ju utsätta andra människor för fara när hajarna lär sig att det finns mat där det finns båtar!

Vi har också läst att tigerhajarna, främst yngre hajar, kan simma in mot grundare vatten på kvällen och natten för att jaga. Nu när vi vet det här, vågar vi snorkla på revet igen. Tyvärr är revet rätt förstört med stora områden där det knappt växer något, bottnen är full med avbrutna korallgrenar och nästan inga fiskar alls.

We stay here a few nights until the wind turns back to the east and northeast so that we dare to sail south with our broken sails. We take the opportunity to order grilled lobster on Shack-A-Kai again, this time we enjoy it in the boat and get to experience more fantastic sunsets in the sea at Palmetto Point.

Vi blir kvar här några nätter tills vinden vrider tillbaka mot ost och nord ost så att vi vågar segla söderut med våra trasiga segel. Vi passar på att beställa grillad lobster på Shack-A-Kai igen, den här gången avnjuter vi den i båten och får uppleva fler fantastiska solnedgångar i havet vid Palmetto Point.

Back to Antigua

Finally, it’s time to return to Antigua and Falmouth Bay. We get good sailing and meet the German sailboat Orinoco that we saw earlier during our stay here in the Caribbean. We take the opportunity to stop at Jolly Harbor and buy some food.

Till sist är tiden inne att återvända till Antigua och Falmouth Bay. Vi får fin segling och möter den tyska segelbåten Orinoco som vi sett tidigare under vår vistelse här i Karibien. Vi passar på att stanna vid Jolly Harbour och handla lite mat.

The wait for the new sails become longer than expected and we have to wait almost two weeks before we can pick up the sails the second week of April. We got plenty of time to plan the crossing back to Europe and discover new places on Antigua.

Väntetiden på de nya seglen blir mycket längre än väntat och vi får vänta nästan två veckor innan vi kan hämta seglen andra veckan i April. Så vi har gått om tid att planera för Atlant-överfarten tillbaka till Europa. Vi hinner även med att upptäcka några nya platser på Antigua.
